Following these 13 verses of wonderful instruction and material by way of digression, he returns to the point. ‘For this reason’ – what reason? Well, the reason has been given in the second chapter.
The posture is not necessarily that important. We have pews, fitted close together, and when we are in public in church we therefore remain seated. But other postures in prayer are just as useful and permissible to you and if you are young, when you are in a private place and by yourself, sometimes kneel in prayer. As you kneel in posture, it may just help you to kneel in your heart. And how much we need to kneel in our hearts before God, especially when young. Years ago, young people were kind of put down; they were not made much of. They were made well aware that they were young and that they were inexperienced. But then culture changed and the whole attitude changed, and suddenly the young became all important, until now you go to university and you can un-platform people, denounce people, have this done, that done. The voice of the young is so powerful. Christian people must not let it affect them. It is good to get on your knees before God, before the Lord your Maker and know humility. If people prayed, and young people prayed in privacy more on their knees, there would be much less of this showmanship in church and people playing their instruments for the sake of applause, people behaving like pop stars in church, if you please. If we were on our knees, we would not want to do that. We would have a right sense of perspective and proportion.
