‘Understanding’ – the Greek word has the basic meaning ‘to bring together’. You are supposed to bring the word of God from here and there, marshal it and bring it to your problem.
Do not be without reason, sense, or thought; do not be without discerning in understanding things. Even as Christians, we may still proceed without thinking, not processing things properly, or are rash and imprudent. The Christian represents truth, the Lord, so for the Christian to be foolish is doubly serious. The super-relaxed Christian does harm. He is switched off to the danger of the world and the devil. He drifts, not thinking about learning, or seeking fellowship. He overestimates himself, setting foolish goals. Why does he aim at that? He tries to achieve some great thing and yet has not even conquered the little peaks. Whole churches go off the rails like this. Some new ‘ism’ comes along and everyone is swept away by it. A young person goes off to university, and encounters all sorts of interesting new ideas for the first time, and is taken in by them all. If you get a problem, if you are persecuted at work, how do you react? Never depend on your own judgement and intuition. Character and integrity can grow. I can have a store of blessing if in each trial I take it to the Lord and prove him. I will become more kind, offer hospitality and show concern for others. Will this next year need be just another year of my life? Will I become more of a grumbler than now? Or could I be more earthly, more dependent on earthly props? Time can be a friend or a foe. To improve time you must value it. Do you value it enough to put forth effort, using your spare moments to reflect, with time well spent in reading, becoming more knowledgeable, or in fellowship? Have you got time to do something special for the Lord? Let us give the Lord the seconds and minutes that he gives to us. I want to not think of pointless things that can achieve nothing. I want to give my hours to the Lord and not fritter them away.
