The Christian cannot live in this world without engaging in the negative work of vigorously putting away sin. We dare not neglect this negative side to the Christian life and to be constantly mortifying the flesh.
Sometimes after conversion the devil will come and he will cause you to desire the pre-conversion life and the things of the world and to be dissatisfied with the Lord and the things of God. Among those temptations is covetousness: I desire the best kind of car, the best kind of house, the best of everything. I want more things, things that speak of my status and station, things that exalt me, things that satisfy me.
Fornication, uncleanness, and covetousness are sins that we are to get as far from as we possibly can. We can never be too far from them. Any temptations which suggest to us that we play with them, compromise with them, regard them as possibilities, or consider what they might be like, are to be fiercely resisted. We should recognize all such as highly dangerous and that to yield to them is to start on the road to shipwreck of our faith. We are strongest in resisting them when we keep them furthest away from us.
