Grace – they are saved; they love Christ in sincerity, but Pauls talks of special grace. May you have ongoing favour. That does not necessarily mean deliverance from all trials, or from all sickness; we all have decaying bodies. He urges us to labour for the Lord. May we have enjoyment and appreciation, answers to prayer, and greater instrumentality. Is this just for ministers, for deacons? No, it is for all. Why does Paul exhort love for Christ? Why not for the Father or for all three persons in the Trinity? Do we not love every member of the Godhead? Yes. We shut our eyes and try to imagine the Father and the Spirit. How? In terms he uses to describe himself, but it is hard. We can love the Spirit for what he does. If it was not for the Spirit prompting me my conscience would not come to life, I would not understand the word, I would have no zeal to obey God, no love for Christ. He is invisible, deeply mysterious. But his work in us comes because of Christ. He is the perfect manifestation of the Godhead. He is God revealed in human nature – the heart of God revealed. Christ says, ‘He that hath seen me hath seen the Father’ (John 14:9). He is without contamination, stain, or blemish. Don’t love God patchily, but sincerely – that is our aim and desire. ‘In sincerity’, is literally ‘in incorruptibility’. Some modern versions go the wrong way – ‘in an enduring, undecaying way’. No, the meaning is that no part of our love is bad, spoilt. The KJV also interprets here, but gives a better rendering.
