The confirmation that Christian slaves do indeed serve the Lord and not just men is that they will receive a reward from the Lord for their service regardless of what they receive from their earthly masters. This is the only reward that should matter to them and is sufficient to motivate them in their service, not only to Christ but to men.
This happy alignment means that we can serve men cheerfully, diligently and enthusiastically. Nothing is without profit to the Christian for God has made it so that in every situation it is possible to do the will of God and to please him. Does the unjust earthly master receive a benefit of service that he does not deserve? Yes, he does, but God gives many good gifts to the undeserving even those that come through the good conduct of his people. We are to count our earthly masters as taking the place of Christ in spite of their very different character. We serve him at the same time that we serve Christ. Because Joseph acted in this way he earned favour first with Potiphar and then with the prison warden. In the goodness of God this good service led to his being brought to the attention of Pharaoh and exalted to the place of authority.
No one can stop Christ rewarding his children. No earthly master however overbearing or brutal can prevent Christ’s reward coming to us, in fact their ill treatment only adds to our reward when patiently borne. Christ rewards us whether we are slave or free, that is, it makes no difference to him what our social status is in this life. He does not value us as men value us according to our standing in society, but he loves the least valued in this world and delights to give them what is good. This should help us not to fret and champ when in a situation which seems to disadvantage us. Such is the power of Christ that no real and lasting disadvantage can come to us whatever men may do.
