The regional governors, the Samaritans, and the nations surrounding Judah and Jerusalem, all the treasury departments, are told that they have got to subscribe too, and if Ezra has needs for the rebuilding of the city and the various other things he is undertaking to do, then they must freely supply him. Well, they are Ezra’s enemies; they are implacably opposed to his work, and now a decree of the emperor is going to compel them to render assistance, and to do so speedily.
It is remarkable to us that a pagan king should think this way, but remember William Carey. His men appreciated his Christian character even while they were still unconverted. In those days there was a certain amount of God fearing, but now nearly all of that has been swept away; we are living in a period of unique godlessness, and we come to think it normal. God will help us. We must recognise it or else we would be crushed by it. As evil times increase, you are encouraged to think that it is the last time.
Today we don’t enrich the house of God with silver, gold, and symbolic riches. All this pictures the coming of Christ and was commanded by God. Now, beauty in the church is in the hearts of people and their work. Surely it should be in our hearts all the time to beautify the church in this spiritual sense. Does the beauty of the house of God mean much to you? Beautiful for God to see. We should all pray for it.
