Ezra 9:3 Commentary and Bible Study

‘When I heard this thing’, Ezra recalls, ‘I rent my garment and my mantle, plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard’ – these are all parts of mourning, deep sorrow, and mourning – ‘and sat down astonied’, which is a word which really means deeply afraid and appalled, as well as grieved and ashamed. What would God do now? He was stunned; he could not think or speak; he was devastated.
