Galatians 4:1 Commentary and Bible Study

Paul now addresses an issue arising from his use of the illustration of the child in the previous chapter. He has argued that while Israelites were still under the law, they were like children under a schoolmaster and they were not released from this tutor until they exercised faith in Christ Jesus; only then did they truly become the children of God. But why were they not also the children of God while they were under the law? His opponents could argue that the son may well be under a tutor or schoolmaster, but he is still a son; he still belongs to his father, and his father still treats him differently to other children. Surely this is just a matter of growing up, indicating that the distinction between the law and the promise is not as great as Paul makes out.No, he answers. The child may be heir of all but while he is still a child; he is not yet given authority over his inheritance. His position as lord of all is put on hold, and he is forced to accept his place as a child, and be little different to a servant in his father’s house. He cannot command the household as he will one day have a right to, but must instead take orders from those who will in future take orders from him. He will not be excused hard work, nor will he escape discipline, and will have to show respect and reverence for his tutors. This temporary reversal of roles is necessary to prepare him for the responsibilities that await him.
