The point of the illustration is the great effectiveness of the yeast even though it is added in a relatively small quantity to the lump of dough. Having been mixed throughout the dough by careful kneading, it causes the whole of the dough to rise under its influence.
The doctrine of righteousness from human works cannot coexist with the grace of God, for if the two are held side by side in the mind, works religion will struggle to destroy grace and to expand and occupy the whole mind; one or the other must die for they cannot both live together in one person. This is why every believer must struggle so hard to keep their minds completely free from error. How can we rest as long as any error remains in our hearts? Not that a believer is always unstable. Those who have firm hold on the gospel are strong in Christ, but those who, like the Galatians, have started to waver need to take firm and decisive action to throw out works religion and embrace the God’s grace in Christ before they are swallowed up by a false trust.
