The rule of these heavenly bodies of course does not replace God’s role is sovereign over all creation. They remain his servants in his house, as Calvin put it. They are said to rule because they are the prominent means that God employs and they occupy such a prominent position. Indeed the sun is a type of the Lord himself, for in Revelation 21:23 it is written, ‘And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of the Lord did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.’ What the sun is to us in this world – a source of light making manifest all things, a revealer of beauty, a source of warmth, a supplier of energy to this world – so our God will be eternally and far more so in the world to come.
