May man, who has been commanded to have dominion over all God’s creation, do what he likes with all that God has made? The answer given is no: man could only take and enjoy what God had permitted him to enjoy. Our first parents were vegetarian, so were all the animals. Things changed after the fall, of course, and God permitted meat as well as herbs for food, but in the beginning it was the herb and the fruit of the tree. Many people actually continue that today, and very healthily, but the Scripture allows a wider practice. Adam saw that God had not overlooked his needs, but even before creating him, God had prepared food for him. The Lord does nothing without perfect foresight and planning.
