A firmament means an expanse. This is the atmosphere, space, if you like. ‘Let there be a firmament [space] in the midst of the waters.’ There are the waters, the land has not yet been formed, and then above that is the atmosphere, the space, and then high above that, not the clouds that we know today, that we see today, but high above that it would appear there was a great layer around the earth, a water vapour canopy. At the time of the flood it was among the water sources that emptied out, but in this early stage there was a firmament, lower space, inner space, as it were. There was the atmosphere around the earth, and then this vapour layer or canopy as it is called.The vapour canopy was transparent, you could see the stars through it, and yet it was there, in effect a great mass of moisture, water, and it would be the basis of the deluge in due time. No doubt it had a very protective function around the earth.
Application
When you think of the planning which went into the creation of the world and the creation of man, just think of the planning of God in our individual lives. You look back and say, ‘See how many things God prepared me for years before. And if I thought about it, I wouldn't be able to figure out why God put me through this experience, or that experience, but as the years go by, it becomes obvious, and you see the preparation.
