The chapter ends with the Canaanite tribes being named, because all who are not saved will go into judgment. We must not forget that his seed is not just the literal seed, who have the land for a time, but the spiritual seed Jews and Gentiles together, the shining stars. They will be given the land, and there is the long list of the Canaanite tribes in detail, previously compounded under the word Amorites. The children of Israel were given their lands by the God of all the earth according to his purpose. He judged those nations and took the lands from them, but not until their iniquity was full. So this is the chapter of famous firsts: the chapter introducing Abram as a prophet, the chapter which you cannot really understand unless you realise that Abram had Christ in mind when he thought of his seed. Numerous seed came from him, but Christ was the most important one among them.
Application
This is about believing the promises of God, all the promises of God, and that is the Christian life. We believe that he is our shield and our great reward, and we read in the Scripture as much as we can about those things. They are our comfort and our joy and our expectation, and our faith rests upon these things. We pray for guidance and help in solving our present problems, and we receive it, but our eye is upon the great promises, not the present.
