‘Lord God, what wilt thou give me seeing I go childless?’ This is very reverent. It was concern and anxiety about the seed that God had promised to him: that he would have seed in excess of the sand on the sea shore, that through him and his countless seed all the nations of the world would be blessed.
He seeks assurance and reassurance, but the answer does not come in the form of a present proof. ‘Here is a solid piece of evidence that the promise will be kept.’ No, the answer is always in the form of a glimpse of the future, a further promise of God, and he has to trust God's integrity, his incapability of breaking his word because he is truth itself. As Abraham trusts God, he will be assured and blessed of God. This is a life of faith. The Charismatics are inclined to want to see immediate proofs, even if their leaders have to fabricate them or exaggerate them. They want to see present miracles, as it were, and things to assure them. But the way of God is to give you an even better view of the promises.
