Genesis 19:1

Abraham had received three visitors: the Lord and two angels, but now only two of the three approach Sodom. Why only two? The obvious explanation is that God will not deal with Lot with the same intimacy as he dealt with Abraham. It is obvious when we see what Lot had done. We experience greater intimacy with the Lord when we seek to obey him. If we want communion with the Lord, then we need to stay on track. We are careful to seek his bidding, to do what he wants, and then he will light up our devotions. They entered the city at the time of day when travellers need to look for accommodation for the night. Lot sat in the gate. He was a city father or magistrate. He wanted wealth, city life, status, and significance. Peter tells us that Lot was a saved man, and he was deeply vexed at what went on in the city; he had spiritual sensitivities and God delivered him out of the city, and yet in Genesis 19 we see his shortcomings. We see what can happen to someone who knows God, if they are headstrong, indifferent to the guidance of God – what a calamity! It is not a matter of being finally lost, but if we are wayward we will know losses, heartache, difficulties; there is a price to pay for spiritual disobedience. The word of God does not tell us this to terrify us into obedience, to beat us down, but it warns us in kindness. The Lord is now no longer there. Lot will not enjoy the close fellowship of the Lord which Abraham enjoyed. When we are headstrong, we forfeit deeper spiritual experiences.
