Lot obeyed admirably at this point, but it is very strange what he said. He ‘spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city.’ That was firm enough; that was clear enough, but Lot’s sons in law did not appreciate their father-in-law and his godliness at all. They could not believe it. They said, ‘You are joking. This city has been here for generations. There is going to be no destruction of this place. We don't believe in that God you claim to have had a message from. We have been doing what we are doing for years. Nothing is going to happen to us’, and they laughed at him. They thought that Lot was a fool, and that is how we get responded to, sometimes politely, sometimes impolitely, but much firm rejection of our appeals and warnings. Did the angels not know what would be the reaction of his sons in law? Yes. But it is Lot who is to be made to see his failure. God does show us our errors, not leaving us in a fool’s paradise.But strangely Lot did not get out of Sodom himself. He knew how, in a shrill voice, to shout and appeal to his family, ‘Get out, the Lord is going to destroy Sodom’, but he did not obey himself. He demonstrates amazing hesitation, even after further warning. This gives us a clear insight into what happens to us when we have one foot is in the world. We become sluggish. Lot is so committed to the world; his mind is on his status in the city and the comfort and security it brings. Those in an unspiritual state are always slow to believe, to respond. Though he was a saved man, Lot was so deeply affected by his worldly position, that they had to pull him out or else he would be destroyed.
