‘Overthrew’ is a great word. The Lord overthrew those cities and all the plain. How? Was it a volcanic eruption? No, probably not. Where did the sulphur come from and the brimstone? It is an act of God. We don't have to try and find a way of explaining it. Was it some other form of visible destruction which could be explained? No. This is unique and unusual, just a pure act of God. There is no way of accounting for it, or describing how it happened. It wasn’t an earthquake. Overthrew: that is a moral overthrow, not a physical overthrow; it does not suggest an earthquake. Sodom was in contention against God, so it was overthrown. It was in a fight against God.
Application
Modern society is engaged in a terrific fight against God, to get morals overthrown and anti-morals established by law in their place, under the protection of the law. It is shaking the fist at God. It is a fight with God, and society will one day be overthrown. Do not let you and I embarrass the Lord when it comes to the day of judgment , so that those who would be overthrown are able to say to God, Yes, but all these Christians were in it with us too; they didn't do exactly the same things, but they shook hands with us, and played our music, and sang songs, and did things our way, so that we become an embarrassment to God. We are supposed to be out of that culture. It will one day be overthrown.
