Comments
After the destruction of Sodom the fear of God came upon Lot in a much stronger way. He feared to dwell any longer in Zoar and saw that while he had been granted his request, it had been a foolish and dangerous thing to ask. The reality of God’s judgment had not sufficiently dawned on him. The passage does not say conclusively that he repented of his compromise. He is not really giving up city life. We might call it a half repentance. ‘God means business. I must get out.’ But he does it out of fear, not because he agrees with God that life in the city is something to be separated from.
Application
Lot drags his feet reluctantly. Don’t ever obey God reluctantly. ‘I must attend church or I am afraid what will happen. I must give up this sin even though I do not really want to, because I might be punished otherwise. We have not really obeyed God until we come to see sin as unprofitable, and hate it as he hates it. Pray, Lord give me grace; change the way I think. Give me the right attitude.
