It is clear what the mob wanted and Lot is in no doubt as to why they are there. They have not simply come to make enquiries about who has come into his house, but the word ‘know’ is being used as a euphemism for sexual intercourse.
Scripture analyses the path they took. ‘Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy’ (Ezekiel 16:49). Pride is mentioned first. Does this surprise us? This is a route to lust. The thing that mattered there was having plenty, fullness of possessions. They didn’t show care or kindness to others. How do believers fall into terrible moral sins, immorality, homosexuality? Does it happen suddenly? No. It starts with pride. We look at our achievements and we scorn others. We weaken ourselves. ‘And fulness of bread’: we give way to ourselves. We never take a stand against any desire. The devil laughs; he knows that he has weakened us to commit further sins. So it is if you want to train for athletics. As you train in small ways, you get stronger. If you never resist small temptations, you become so weak. Every appetite is indulged: idleness, pleasure, then selfishness. How weakened we are!
