Genesis 2:10 Commentary and Bible Study

Holding to the geography: ‘And a river went out of Eden [was sourced in Eden] to water the garden.’ It sounds like a mighty spring originating in Eden, and from its source it parted at some point and became four heads, and the names are given which don’t mean very much to us today. It was a place with water sources and beautiful trees and perfect food, and it could at some time be identified in some way, though it would not have been the same as it was in earliest times. The description that follows reads as a literal historical account. Details are given which would have no place in an allegory, and places named with the clear intention of identifying actual locations on the earth. Moses seems to expect his readers to recognise at least some of the geographical details which he provides. The names he uses are obviously names given to rivers and regions by men, and the presence of precious minerals and gem stones became known through subsequent human exploration.
