Even though Abraham has lied under the pressure of the situation, God does not desert him. Abimelech has taken Sarah for himself and therefore he is warned personally, and he is warned in the strongest possible terms.
George Whitfield preached a famous sermon on this very text: ‘Behold, thou art but a dead man.’ That was one of his great evangelistic sermons in central London in the 1739 awakening. That is our task today: to call out to men and women. Not perhaps in terms so blunt, but effectively, what we are trying to get across is ‘Behold you are a dead man, a dead woman, if you go on unsaved in sin.’ That is the really the summary of our message. ‘For the woman which thou hast taken, for she is a man's wife.’
