Abraham seems to have lost all contact with his brother, Nahor, so that now when news reaches him of Nahor’s children and grandchildren, Abraham is hearing about them for the first time. He apparently knows about Nahor’s wife Milcah (she is named in Genesis 11:26-29), but not about their children. The fact that Nahor has grandchildren while Abraham only has children is easily accounted for by the great age of Abraham when Isaac was born.One reason why this is recorded here in Moses’ narrative is that in Genesis 24 we are going to introduced to the question of a wife for Isaac. It is explained in advance who that wife is, and whom Rebekah is descended from, so that we can be sure that Isaac did not take a Canaanite wife, and how it was that God provided for him, again.
