Genesis 22:9 Commentary and Bible Study

Abraham arrives at Mount Moriah which would subsequently be known as the temple mount in Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 3:1).His faith does not fail at the last moment, but he carries it through to the end and builds an altar on which to offer up his only son (verse 12). He ‘laid the wood in order and bound Isaac’, his healthy, strong adult son, who submitted and allowed it, ‘and laid him on the altar upon the wood.’ Why was it necessary to bind Isaac, the question is asked? It is done to show all who read of these events that Isaac also was party to this obedience of faith. Isaac fully submitted; only by his submission could this have been done. What heroism of faith! He believed his father. He worked with his father. They would prove the Lord together. He knew he was to be the heir. He knew he was to be the one from whom the great nation would arise, the family of the faithful through whom Messiah would come, and through whom all the nations of the world would be blessed, but he submitted in faith. What a tremendous response from Isaac.
