Comments
The formal negotiation continues in the presence of the people of the land, who act as witnesses. Abraham acknowledges the generosity of Ephron, but insists on paying for the field. While he respects them, he will not receive anything for nothing from them. He knows that God has given him the land and taken it away from its current occupants, but this must not be made into an excuse for failing to do business on a just basis with them. How can Abraham accept favours from those who he knows are under the curse of God?
Application
It is a dangerous business for a believer to put himself in debt to a great extent to those who do not share his love for the Lord God. Their lives operate on such different principles and it cannot be assumed that they will not use the debt to extract some favour in return which puts pressure on us to contravene some principle of God’s word.
