Ephron when pressed sets a value on the land, but assumes a polite disinterestedness in receiving any payment from Abraham, and appears only reluctantly to quote a price because Abraham insists on him doing so. However as Aalders points out, the sum quoted is exorbitantly high. He says, ‘This sly Hittite took gross advantage of Abraham’s situation and quoted a price that was unconscionably high’.
Application
Men can be very skilled at feigning generosity to one another, when all the time they are seeking their own advantage. It is difficult to be sure of the comparative value of currency in those days, but both Leupold and Delitzsch regard it as a high price for a small plot of land in those days.
