Abraham treated this hint at the value of the field as a clearly stated amount and did not haggle further over the amount even though it was high. It would have been unseemly to do so in the circumstances, needing a burial place for Sarah, nor did he resent the high price since he knew that as the friend of God, he could not be effectively taken advantage of. He had no fear of appearing to be weak in the face of bargaining pressure, but rather saw every interaction with sinful men as an opportunity to show the different principles that governed his life and an underlying trust in God that all things would work for good.

Questions
The word used for the currency among the Jews comes from a word meaning ‘to weigh’, ‘to weigh out’, the very means by which the amount was agreed. This amount was the recognised amount according to the current practises of the merchants, i.e. standard currency.
