Genesis 24:17

The servant hurries to meet her. He realises that she has appeared even before he has finished praying and knowing how quick the Lord is to hear earnest prayer, he wonders if this is the one. He hurries because he is eager to see the Lord’s answer and to complete the task given to him by his master. He asks his simple question without making any demands, so that the response if it comes will be entirely voluntary. She agrees to his request immediately, without any reluctance or show of delay, and hurries to carry out her word and lower the water jar for him to drink. The is the answer to his prayer, she fulfils the further sign and runs back to the well with alacrity to draw more water for his camels to drink. This readiness to serve another man’s servant and even his animals is a double sign. It is specifically the sign that the servant asked for. It is also evidence of a heart that is blessed with humility. The humble do not consider it any disadvantage to serve others. A person’s behaviour and conversation reveal so much more about his or her character, interests and spiritual seriousness, than appearances ever can.
Application
We must rely on the Lord to provide the right spouse. Who knows his own character well enough to understand the character of a wife that is suitable to be a lifelong companion for him? Who knows the future work that God has for him to do in his married state and what gifts must be present in the wife with whom he must accomplish these things? Who knows the nature of the children that he shall have according to the plan of God and what woman must be a mother to those children?
