The blessing of providence are so marvellous just because they are so totally beyond our capacity to engineer for ourselves. The knowledge that God is working for us with all His Almighty power is the strongest confirmation of his love towards us. This is particularly wonderful when it comes as the answer to specific prayer, showing that God is not deaf to our cries. He has no desire to hide himself from those who love him and walk in obedience to him, and therefore he comes out into the open, as it were, and allows us to see his works plainly. God does not always work so plainly, but on certain occasions for our great encouragement, he shows us openly how he can bless us, and what will be our constant experience in heaven.
This goodness of God towards us never fails to amaze us. It is a cause of wonder that the Almighty should involve himself with human affairs and take any notice of the individual circumstances of human beings on earth. This answer to prayer tells us that though we are like dust in his sight, that he condescends in his love to take into consideration the needs and requests of his people. Is it presumption for a man to expect God to take notice of his cries? No, they ask in humility, trusting that God will hear them not because of their significance as human beings, but only for the sake of His own grace and for the honour of his name.
