As with Abraham, so now with Isaac, an unexpected obstacle crops up. Sarah had been barren and now Rebekah suffers from the same condition, and yet the will of God was so clear and the promises of God could not be fulfilled unless Isaac and Rebekah had a child.
Though it was a long wait, the Lord was entreated of him. The word ‘intreated’ is given in our version twice. It is a beautiful word. It is astonishing that God permits himself to be entreated. God who determines all things, God who is sovereign, yet loves us as children and listens to our cries, and responds in ways that we can see. These are wonderful mysteries and astonishing privileges.
