‘No man hath seen God at any time’, says the apostle John, ‘the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him’ (John 1:18). We therefore know that the appearances of God to the patriarchs were appearances of the preincarnate Christ.
Although God does not speak to us through theophanies today, he does give us very definite and specific guidance. We must seek his will at the major crossroads of life and not just make up our own minds what to do. Sometimes the Lord’s guidance tells us to do unwelcome things, and we must be careful to follow it. We might see some advantage for ourselves in going a certain way, but the Lord makes clear that we have duties or loyalties in another direction.
