Evidently Jacob had been none too quick in going to Isaac even though his father had expressed surprise that he returned so soon. The moment he had been dismissed by his father, Esau came in with the game that he had prepared. Here was the one whom the father had wanted to bless all along, the son whom he favoured and whom he had shown by the terms of his blessing that he wanted to elevate above his brother. Esau too had made tasty food for his father but it was too late. Clearly a deceiver would not risk discovery by coming in second to receive the blessing. Esau knew nothing of what had already taken place and yet he knew what his father had asked him to do. This therefore could not be any other than Esau, and Isaac was shocked at the discovery. ‘Who are you’, he asks, already knowing the painful truth. That son who has come and gone was Jacob acting his cunning part as Isaac at times suspected.
