Esau’s jealousy of his brother turned to murderous hatred. He had received a blessing from his father but it had put him in second place, which he could not bear.
The full hostility of the world against the church now emerges. It is always our enemy. It will always take from us. Even when it smiles upon us, the devil, who is behind the world, is seeking to destroy us. But it is true. Jacob and Rebekah had gone the wrong way about it. So Jacob had to flee. He got the blessing, but he did not get the family for many, many more years. Rebekah paid as well as Jacob; they would never see each other again after this event. Jacob, ironically, would be deceived by his own sons in due course. He would have to enter into hard service for 20 years. He would be further sanctified by the Lord. The lesson we learn from this is not that in the interests of a good cause we may do wrong. When Christian people do wrong, they have to pay for it. The Lord will see to that.
