The Book of Genesis gives us a historical account of the lives of the patriarchs, but the remarkable thing is that God has overruled their histories to teach us deep spiritual lessons. What now happens to Jacob parallels the conversion of every true believer.
Sadly, in our time, not many know about God. This is the most knowledgeable generation in history, and yet it is so ignorant about spiritual things. The young grow up knowing nothing about God or his word. How then do we look into spiritual things? We are limited being with bodies of clay; we cannot see out of our box or grasp God who is of spiritual essence. We cannot read his thoughts, discover his purposes, know his attributes unless he reveals himself. It is the most obvious thing that he must reveal himself. He must speak into our world, so there is this divine revelation. Right from earliest pages of the Bible, there are biographies of how people come to meet with God, what it means to walk with him, find him, prove him.
The New Testament warns us that before we are converted, we are like a wide-open door; we have no holy of holies and every desire flits in and out and has to be gratified. Esau did the first thing that came into his head. What about us? Do we behave as Esau with regard to God as if he does not exist, and dismiss him for the here and now? For us also, thoughts come in and out so easily and reprogram us, and we are conformed to the mould of this world. We will never find God like that.
Some of us think we have life well worked out, but it won’t turn out like that. You might think I am 17, 18, 19; I have it all planned out, but you won’t believe what direction your life takes.
