Because of the rarity of these markings, Laban likes Jacob’s suggestion and quickly agrees to it. If Jacob was asking for the animals which had the least common markings, that was fine by Laban.
‘The children of this world’, Christ has taught us, ‘are in their generation wiser than the children of light’ (Luke 16:8). Christ’s disciples are called to be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves. The believer does not have to protect his own interests for the Lord is on his side. Many times it will appear that the world has outmanoeuvred us, but God by a superior wisdom will protect the eternal interests of his people. We need to and can safely have dealings with an unbelieving world without fearing what man will do to us (Psalm 118:6). We can discard all cunning and strategy because we are confident that God will protect us by a more reliable means.
