Jacob admits that he was afraid, and that his fear had made him do something which would not normally be considered kind or friendly or the right way to behave in taking a man’s two daughters away, probably never to see them again. As Calvin says, he ‘leaves it undetermined whether or not his fear was culpable.
How do parents respond when their children are accused of a fault? Do they react defensively without investigating the truth of the accusation? This does not help the children. Certainly they like to see their parents come to their defence, but they need to be set an example of justice and fairness, not of bias. Given human nature, it is not unreasonable for a matter to be investigated.
