Jacob had been sent away to Haran by his father Isaac, in order to seek a wife. At the same time he had been escaping from the murderous intentions of his hot-tempered brother, Esau, following his success in tricking Isaac into blessing him rather than Esau.
We must seek the guidance of God for all the major decisions of life, he alone knows perfectly the consequences of all our actions. Plainly God could have brought him out at any time, but he didn’t. God does not always choose to deliver his people out of hard and difficult circumstances: it is his intention that we should be tried. We grow so impatient about our circumstances and we forget that all will not be flowing with milk and honey all the time. But now Jacob had been purged.
This event showed Jacob that God intervenes in great ways for his people. The big interventions are what count. Some make a great fuss over every little coincidence. Of course theologically they are from God, but here we are taught to look for great deliverances as signs. Don’t be petty minded. How do you get the big interventions? Obey God. Attempt great things for God. Take risks for Christ. Jacob now steps forward in faith.
