Some imagine that money can put all things right; that there is a payment that can be made which is sufficient for any wrong done. Some take this attitude with the Lord also. This of course is the basis of all works religion. ‘I may have broken his commandments, but God will surely be impressed with my extra effort to do good. How can he ignore that? Is he indifferent to good?’ It never crosses the mind of such a person that even the best that I can do is flawed and offensive to God. How can I not put him in my debt? But no, there is noting that can be done by human beings to recompense God for the sins we have committed. There are crimes even on earth that men will not accept any payment for (Proverbs 6:29-32).
