The earth will respond to Cain as if it had personality of its own. So horrific is Cain’s crime that even the inanimate earth will behave as if it were shocked and appalled by what he has done. The ground was already cursed for Adam’s sake, but now a further curse is pronounced which is unique to Cain, so that in his case even the residual strength of the soil was sapped. He is given no further chance now to admit or deny his act of murder, and when he does next speak he does not deny the justice of his punishment and so admits in effect admits what he has done. The earth which received his brother’s blood will take the side of the victim against the murderer. It was as if the earth was more merciful than Cain in covering over his terrible act. Cain thought himself beyond the reach of justice because of the way he had concealed what he had done, but God makes the inanimate earth to be his judge when no man came forth to accuse him. Wherever he went it would turn against him. How dreadful a reminder this would be to him of his crime. He was a tiller of the ground and the soil provided his livelihood, but he will never till the ground successfully; his farming will be barren and arid. It will be as if the earth remembers his murderous act and avenges his brother’s blood.‘A fugitive and a vagabond’ – the Hebrew word for vagabond means wanderer: ‘A fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.’ This further punishment meant that he could never rest securely in one place. He will be no better than a fugitive, constantly needing to move on and wander to the next place, ready to flee from human society. His guilt would never leave him and would make him fearful of all human company. He is going to be sentenced with servitude, hard service. He is going to have to earn his bread by doing odd jobs for other people, if you like, or going from place to place wherever there is a yield from the soil that he did not plant himself. That is going to be his future.
