Strangely enough the prison gave Joseph many interesting experiences. Not only did he meet criminals but, because it was the prison which served Pharaoh’s household, he met many high-ranking officials who had fallen from favour. No doubt they spent hours discussing their work and their problems with Joseph – the jailer, who was himself a prisoner, and who showed such very kindly concern in their affairs.Two particularly distinguished prisoners arrive, and in spite of their seniority, they too are committed into Joseph’s hands – Egyptian high-ranking officials in the charge of a Hebrew slave! The text says that the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, but we have already been introduced to Potiphar as the ‘captain of the guard’. Matthew Henry suggests that he may by now have discerned Joseph’s innocence, but dare not release him ‘for fear of disobliging his wife.’ Joseph is a man of compassion, and these prisoners must have counted themselves fortunate to have such an unusual man to be over them. The chief butler and the chief baker are senior officers in Pharoah’s house, very important men. Maybe they normally managed hundreds of servants in Pharoah’s household. But Pharaoh is offended, whether justly or unjustly, we are not told. He decides they must be punished and so Joseph receives new guests who are going to be the means of his deliverance. He is now virtually running the place, but he had still better remember who they are, and treat them with respect, for he is a Hebrew slave and they may be re-elevated in due time. Besides, given his godly character, it was natural for him to do so.
