Joseph is a trusted servant of the warden, but he is still obliged to live in the unpleasant conditions of a prison. All his hopes of being released have come to nothing.
It is a comfort for us to know that we are not under trials or afflictions because God has forgotten us or because he is unable to remove us from them; we are there because that is the best place for us to be. Like the apostle, we must learn in whatever state we are in to be content. No doubt God could have dramatically changed Joseph’s circumstances at any time. When they did change, it was with such a profusion of favourable providences that we are left in no doubt that all was from God.
We should then learn to offset the misery of our present circumstances with the realisation that our deliverance is certain and that it is planned for a particular day, although we do not know when. The world’s present power over us, and its present confidence is only an illusion. Who can fail to rejoice that knows that tomorrow, he will be released from prison, no matter how unpleasant life may be today?
