The brothers are still bowed to the ground before Joseph and speaking to him from that low position. There is no bravado about them anymore.
The one seeking the Lord may not at first come with a truly sincere heart. There may be all sorts of wiles with which we try to come into the kingdom of heaven. But Christ sees every one of them, and will not let us enter until we abandon them all. We cannot come to him until we seek him with all our hearts. His way of dealing with us, may look very similar to the way Joseph dealt with his brothers. There will be hold ups and delays, apparent successes and then severe disappointments. If I am trying to get onto the road to heaven and I cling to the idols of music or worldly entertainment, Christ will not hear me. He will not take away my guilt until I have really repented.
It's not just conviction now, it's repentance, and repentance consists not only of words to God, acknowledgement of shame and guilt and sin and need of forgiveness, but it involves turning away from sin. Of course, you can't altogether do it as a sinner, but you're ready to do it, and you say, Lord, forgive me and save me. When you say, ‘Save me’, you're really saying, ‘By thy great power, take me away from my sin. I will turn from it, give me the power. I will give up my worldly parties. I will give up my filthy and worldly movies. I will give up my worldly music created by the people who are into drugs and free sex and whatever is in defiance of God's holy law. I will no longer be a worshiper and imbiber of all that. Lord, help me, deliver me. My life is rotten and stinks and is lived for me and the world.’ There is action accompanying repentance.
