Jacob was now aged, and though he had been a man of great physical strength, he could no longer make the journey without assistance as his sons had needed to do. He comes down with his sons and his sons’ sons. his daughters and his sons’ daughters. Only two women are named in the following list, and yet daughters and sons’ daughters are referred to in the plural. This may be simply a manner of speaking, or it may be that there were others not included in the list. Certainly the twelve boys given to Jacob are a remarkable provision of God, designed to build the nation which he had promised to the patriarchs.
