Jacob blessed them, warts and all – the bad points, the things they must avoid; the good points. We wish we had in any family of God's people all these virtues: the willingness to work, as well as the vision of a Joseph, all the different skills that are named. But we have far greater blessings in the blessing given to us, promised to us in the gospel.
When we come to this passage we need to ask ourselves those questions: What duty do I read here for me? What reference to Christ or picture of him do I see? What rebuke or reproof is there? As we ask all the devotional questions, we will find this passage very rich, very encouraging, and very challenging.
