Suddenly the poetry goes to the negative side: ‘Unstable as water.’ The Hebrew has words that indicate the idea of boiling, so it is unstable in the sense of turning to steam, and frothing.
We are all unstable when we don’t keep conscience alive. Self-control needs foundations: a standard. It happens to all of us to some degree, but some are less stable than others. Do we find ourselves weak? Is anger and instability your problem? You don’t have to stay like it. God can change you. We should pray for strength. We should practice self-denial too. If you always give in to harmless things, little things, unnecessary things, you weaken yourself. If you work at stability, God will give you position.
In the kingdom of God and among the tribes of Israel, it is a terrible thing to breach boundaries, moral boundaries, any boundary laid down by God. It will mean the forfeiture of something precious.
