Simeon and Levi were Jacob’s sons numbers two and three. ‘Brethren’, well Jacob is not just stating the obvious.
That is a lesson to us in the church today. We must not have a spirit of being motivated by personal anger, hatred, fury; it is outlawed in the way in which God in his providential oversight deals with the children of Israel in ancient times. This is a trait found in some. Christians may be driven to hit back, not to make wrongs right, but to take revenge. They quench pain by inflicting it on others. Some, if ever hurt, will for the next few years do what they can to repay the hurt, either directly or indirectly by gossip. They have a vicious streak. Don’t get involved with it. Don’t listen to their gossip. It is very infectious and if you listen you tend to help them justify themselves. They share it and if others listen, seems to make it right. Reprove them, yes, but don’t get alongside them or humour them.
