Noah’s father, Lamech, was also a prophet, and prophesied even in the naming of his son. The name Noah means rest or comfort, and the verse explains in what sense Lamech expected rest to come to the godly through this son.
Prophecy is especially for God’s people. The prophecy stated that Noah’s life would bring comfort and rest but for most, it brought death and judgment , when all breathing creatures except those in the art were destroyed. The rest and comfort are from the point of view of the godly not the ungodly. Blessing cannot come on the godly without judgment coming on the ungodly, who are implacably opposed to the truth. They must be removed from the earth and from before God’s face before God’s name is lifted up in the earth. The godly are troubled by the wickedness of the ungodly, as Jude’s quotation from Enoch prophecy shows. The removal of the curse of the ground must also involve the removal of wickedness in man that had brought that curse in the first place. What is it that grieves the righteous most? The hardships of life on earth, or the wickedness, murders, rapes, injustices, lies, and blasphemies of evil men and women around them? Surely the latter.
