The length of Adam’s life is not presented as anything other than literal history. Adam lived another 800 years after the birth of Seth and then died.
Such a long time after it had been said to him, ‘You shall surely die’, this judgment was finally implemented. The delay made it no less certain that in the end Adam would die. The word of God can wait a thousand years to be fulfilled and yet man cannot escape the sentence pronounced against him. God was willing to let Adam appear for a long time to have escaped death, but finally his word was fulfilled. Men in their hearts believe that they will not see death, ‘that their houses shall continue forever, and their dwelling places to all generations’ (Psalm 49:11). This is true in spite of paying lip service to the reality of death, for their actions indicate that they believe all that they have is in this life, and that it will never be taken away from them, for if men and women believed that they will lose all, they would certainly prepare for the world to come.
