Here it is noted that the sons – indicating that they all agreed to do this – did unto him, according as he commanded them. You get a hint here that the sons by now – they had been sometime in Egypt – were reconciled to Joseph, and had repented of their deeds already, and had reformed their lives, those of them that had been wayward. ‘For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah’, and there is the detail, the very grave that had been left for the descendants, and for Jacob to use, the only plot of land in Canaan owned by the family at this time. And then they returned into Egypt. Joseph and the brothers all went together by the sound of it. They returned to Egypt and life went on as it was before, with one exception, which is dealt with in the next verse.
