Genesis 6:13 Commentary and Bible Study

I will destroy man, says the Lord, all mankind with the exception of Noah and his family. Noah found grace; he walked with God. He would be the founder of a new race. This is a universal flood, for after the flood water recede there are no human beings left alive on earth and the entire earth must be repopulated from Noah’s children.‘By faith Noah, being warned of God concerning things not seen as yet, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house’ (Hebrews 11:7). The judgment of the human race through the flood was a kind of prophetic warning. There is always some warning from God if we repudiate him. The flood came early on in the history of our race, but it serves the purpose of warning all subsequent generations. The Lord Jesus and other New Testament writers refer back to it, and on every occasion it is in order to issue a warning. What God has done once he is able to do again, and he will do again at the end of time. he does not judge every single generation even though men constantly deserve to be judged. The flood came once and has been recorded independently in countless separate cultures of the world with varying degrees of accuracy. The race memory ensures that the warning from God that it brings is still alive. But let not foolish people dismiss the lesson it brings, for it is given to do them good.God spoke to Noah. The Hebrew intimates a personal communication. It implies that he heard an audible voice speaking directly to him. God made him aware what was going to happen, and certainly he needed to be absolutely sure that it was the will of God that he should build an ark before embarking on such a momentous project. The earth itself was not destroyed but the human environment with its animals, its plants, and its crops was, and the face of the earth as they knew it would be changed beyond recognition. So now this solemn announcement is made specifically to Noah and the instructions for the building of the ark are given.
