Comments
For the first time the word ‘covenant’ is used in the Bible. We see a covenant in the Garden of Eden, but we see it because that is what it appears to be: a covenant of works in Eden, which fell very, very early. But here the word ‘covenant’ appears. This covenant is an agreement, but it is a one-sided agreement. God is promising – there is safety, there is preservation, and they for their part must trust him and come in to the ark, ‘thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.’ That is the covenant, a covenant of survival, and all Noah has to do is to enter. Yes, he did more in a sense, because he was called to build the ark, but when it came to the critical moment, the great test, and the devastating flood came, all he had to do was to enter it.
Application
That is another reason why it is a picture of conversion – all we do is by faith enter in, trust in Christ. He suffers and dies for sins. All the Father’s billows and waves passed over him, but he lifts his church up above the flood waters. He sees us through the flood. He delivers us from the everlasting punishment of sin, the judgment from Almighty God, the Father.
